Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
There is an issue that pops up far more than I think is relevant; it came up briefly in Ms. Gazis-Sax’s post. That is whether or not women shave their underarms and legs. Often this appears as the classic “hairy legged feminist” insult, or parading in nicer clothes as commentary about male-female relations or the future of femininity. I think it’s a red herring, distracting us for more constructive conversation. The baby boomers started arguing about this in 1965 and never moved on.
Why does anyone care? Shave your legs or don’t. It’s a personal choice not a political act. Why is a woman’s leg hair worth discussing more than a man’s beard? Raise your hand if you went to college and didn’t stop shaving something for awhile. Is this the new me? Is this who I want to be?
Being For or Against Underarm Shaving sounds bizarre and antiquated to me. Do young men spend time fretting about whether or not women shave their legs? They probably spend more time manscaping. And thank god; it’s about time. And before anyone goes off on how this is evidence of the feminization of America, please stop. It’s not feminine if it’s about your balls. If it’s evidence of anything, it’s of our increasingly youth-obsessed culture. Or maybe that we wear more revealing clothing. Or that in film and photography hairy bodies don’t look as appealing. Or maybe it’s just fashion, with however great or little meaning one attaches to that.
There are many different kind of people in the world (cue banjo) – not all of them have to fit into this very specific mold. There’s enough to go around. If a man is more attracted to women who shave, then sleep with those women. I am fascinated-slash-annoyed by the idea that women somewhere not shaving makes it difficult for men to have satisfying relationships. Fashions come and go and there are always groups whose fetish is out of favor.
A fetish? I’m a red-blooded American male; I don’t have fetishes! Let’s see… a man who can’t possibly have sex with a woman who doesn’t do something unnatural that was unheard of for most of human history? Luckily, that’s a convenient fetish and one that is easily solved with a partner who is GGG. A man worried &/or angry that women he doesn’t even know aren’t shaving their legs? Sounds like a great topic for a visit to the therapist’s office.
Not shaving is not a reflection of the Great Decline of Femininity. Women didn’t even shave until the 20th century. And it hasn’t been lost to history, like the big womany secrets of abortion and birth control. One could purchase a vibrator in the Sears catolog in the 1880s, and the disturbing Heidelberg Electric Belt was available in the early 1900s. But the humble razor isn’t to be found until 1922. That’s less than 100 years of shaving. Were women in 1850 not feminine?
The funny thing is, despite the radical feminist movement, the whole not shaving thing doesn’t seem to have caught on. I don’t know of any statistics on the matter, but I’d hazard a guess that no more young women resist shaving now than in the hairy heydays of hippidom. In the highly scientific sample group of my circle of friends in their early 30s, more have had laser hair removal than have not. Collectively we’ve hit pretty much every area – underarms, legs, stomach, upper lip, eyebrows, toes, bikini line, down under, and the unspoken N-area.
Are we denying our true selves after years of pressure by the patriarchy? If we don’t shave for a week are we upsetting the social hierarchy and threatening collective masculinity? Um… no and no. Neither condition is better or worse, it’s just preference. I’ll stand in solidarity with my fuzzy-legged sisters, and I expect them to stand by my choice to head to the spa for a session with Katyuska.
