Here’s a few more translations from English to American …
pea souper – a thick fog decended on London
jacket – baked potato, often with beans
mash – potatoes are mashed, peas are mushed
tart, prozzy, strollop – prostitutes
tommies, toms – prostitutes, used by police
kerb crawling – I saw a street sign that said “No Kerb Crawling”. Apparently, “men can be prosecuted for ‘kerb crawling’ for prostitutes, but paying for sex in a private apartment is not a crime.”
