Princess Peep of the Milky Way

Just want to give a shout out to one my favorite peeps – Carrie – who has crafted a tasty little diorama featuring Princess Peep of the Milky Way at the Minnesota State Fair.  For those of you who had not had the pleasure of attending The Great Get Together, we elect several princesses whose likenesses are then carved out of giant cubes of butter.  Yes, that’s right, their heads are carved out of butter.  Each day one princess poses in an air conditioned rotating glass display while an artist releases her image from butter.

Last year Princess Kay of the Milky Way was a young woman who was the third in her family to be carved in butter.  Her mom has all three butterheads in freezers in the garage.

Carrie has brought the scene to life for you, complete with fair goers with pickle-hats and food-on-a-stick.  If you MUST vote for someone other than me, I guess vote for her.  But you really should vote for me.

“Repeep Harlequin!” Said the Ticktockman

Ready… Set… Diorama time!  That’s right lovers of all things crafty, it’s the 8th annual Pioneer Press Peep Diorama Contest.  Yaaaay!

From a simple box…

…unfolds a tale of heroism, civil disobedience and the power of candy.

From Harlan Ellison’s “Repent Harlequin!” Said the Ticktockman.

“Somewhere nearby, he could hear the metronomic left-right-left of the 2:47 P.M. shift, entering the Timkin roller-bearing plant in their sneakers.  A minute later, precisely, he heard the softer right-left-right of the 5:00 A.M formation, going home” …

“Once more in anticipation, the elfin grin spread, and there was a tooth missing back there on the left side.”… “And as he pulled the trough-pins, the air-boat slid over the factory workers and one hundred and fifty-thousand dollars’ worth of jelly beans cascaded down on the expresstrip.” …

“Jelly beans!  Millions and billions of purples and yellows and greens and licorice and grape … tinkling on the slidewalk and bouncing away and rolling about underfoot and filling the sky on their way down with all the colors of joy and childhood and holidays, coming down in a steady rain, a solid wash, a torrent of color and sweetness out of the sky from above, and entering a universe of sanity and metronomic order with quite-mad coocoo newness.  Jelly beans!” …

“The shift was delayed seven minutes.

They did not get home for seven minutes.

The master schedule was thrown off by seven minutes.”

Other Peep Dioramas Almost As Good As Mine

Peep Insanity has swept the country – here are my favorites.  Other than MacPeep of course.

From the Pioneer Press competition:

Soylent Green is Peeple.

Probably the best photograph of the competition.  And brilliant.

This would only be cuter if it were a British phone booth.

They can all fit in there.

Peepy Training

There are 4 UP dioramas.  I think this one is lovely.

Peep-A-Que.  I enjoy the burned marshmallows.

And from the Washington Post contest:

Sweet Revenge

And my very favorite… Peepster’s Kill Room

Don’t forget to vote.  And leave comments for MacPeep!

Shameless Self Promotion – and Peeps!

Out, Out Damn Spot!

Hey everybody!  I’m back and you won’t believe everything I accomplished in a week without blogging.  Most importantly, my awesome friend Carrie had the fantazgreat idea to make a Peep Diorama.  We were planning on entering the prestigious Washington Post contest, but decided we should support our local community so we opted for the Pioneer Press instead.  The Pioneer Press Peep Diorama contest has been around 7 years whereas the Post is only in its 3rd year.  There is a nifty prize, but Carrie can have that.  I only want the glory.

So here’s what YOU CAN DO:

The panel of judges will take into account how many votes the various submissions receive.  The leading entry as of this writing has 1700 votes.  So drop everything right now, go to the Pioneer Press website and vote for our diorama – MACPEEP. In the unlikely event you think some other diorama is more deserving of the winning title you should of course vote with your conscience.  (traitor)   If you are related to me you have to vote for MacPeep even if you aren’t appropriately appreciative of our artistry and brilliance.  Remember, I have never won first prize in anything so this is very important for my self esteem.

Special thanks to Mark, Steph and Craig for their artistic eyes and helpful contributions.

Below are photo details of our diorama, additional pics are on Flickr and check out Carrie’s documentation of The Making of MACPEEP.

Thank You Thank You for your support.  Tell all your peeps!

Vote here – page 13 under “Vote”.

The Wyrd Sisters

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and tongue of sheep,
Wool of bat and blood of peep,
Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
